Airports The main international airport is the J.A. Pengel International Airport (IATA code PBM) which is located at Zanderij in the district Para, some 45 kilometers south of Paramaribo. Besides the JPIA, there are 58 airfields, many of which are grass strips serving the interior. The runway surfaces of the airstrips range from asphalt to sand, clay and grass. The lengths of the runway vary between 420 to 1,180 meters. Most airstrips are only capable of accommodating STOL (Short Take Off & Landing) aircrafts.
